Water Conservation
Students at Holy Trinity have experienced a variety of ways to learn about and practice conserving water.
Academic year 2017-18:
- Leaky Faucet Patrol
- Water Conservation signs: School-wide
- Stream Tables: Grade 4
- Soil Horizons: Grade 2
- Chesapeake Bay- Water Resource for Maryland: Grade 4
Leaky Faucet Patrol: Student Green Team
March 2018. Members of the Student Green Team conducted a Leaky Faucet Audit. They checked all 21 sink faucets and 4 water fountains for leaks. Of the 21 sinks in bathrooms, classrooms, and kitchen the students identified 9 sink faucets dripped after turning off, but quickly ended dripping, and one sink faucet in the kitchen had maintained a continuous drip. The remaining 11 sinks faucets had no leaks. The school’s 4 water fountains were all found to be “non” leaky. The Student Green Team reported their findings to the principal so that repairs could be made.

Water Conservation signs: School-wide
Fourth grade students discussed ways to protect and conserve the water on our earth. They worked to make water conservation signs. The students intent was to provide others with colorful, attention getting reminders to conserve water. They went around the school and placed these signs in rooms that had sinks: bathroom, Science Room, classrooms and in the hallways! October 2017-March 2018.

Stream Tables: Grade 4- January 2017 Science
4th grade students conducted a series of stream table labs, over a span of two weeks, to study soil and water conservation. Students first observed the effects of water on land. Next, students experimented placing plants in different locations on the stream table and made observations on the impact these plants had on erosion. Using buildings students constructed out of heavy paper, students placed buildings at various locations in the stream table. Students then tested out different theories on the impact placement of buildings had on land erosion and building integrity. Through the series of stream table labs, students gained a deeper understanding of ways to prevent erosion on our river banks and streams. January 2017.

Soil Horizons: Grade 2- December 2017-February 2018
Students performed several labs on the content of soil found in their school yard. Students determined the soil contained numerous substances: pebbles, sand, clay, dead insects, roots of plants, and sticks. Mixing soil with water and allowing specimen to settle, students were able to identify various layers (horizons) and make predictions on the benefits/uses of each horizon. Students determined that the better the water was able to drain, the cleaner the water was. The specimens with a lot of clay were not able to drain well and the water remained very muddy. December 2017-February 2018.

Chesapeake Bay- Water Resource for Maryland: Grade 4- May 2017
The 4th grade studied the Chesapeake Bay. They explored the Bay's importance as a Maryland natural resource. Students studied the effects of the environment and human habitation on the Bay. Students took a Wetlands Walk, waded and explored in the river. They searched for signs of pollution, erosion and erosion prevention efforts.
The 4th graders also had a bake sale with the proceeds being donated to Camp Wabanna. The Camp then used this money for a service project of helping to plant trees on their property.
