Donna Kalkbrenner and Cathalene Symister-David each participated in taking the Cornell Lab of Ornithology webinar “Integrating Literacy and Science with Birds". The webinar offered many insightful strategies and resources teachers may use to teach literacy through the learning about birds.

Sharon Winton participated in the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to learn more about integrating the school yard for attracting birds. Featured in the webinar were methods of actively engaging students academically as well as physically and socially. Suggestions were given in setting up and maintaining the garden as well as ways to attract birds.

Mary Baker engaged in an informative webinar hosted by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: Evolution of Flight: Exploring Online Classroom Interactive Tools. During this one-hour webinar, instruction was given for identifying bird features and suggestions of hands-on activities for discovering the evolution of birds.

Teaching Trees: Utilizing Your Schoolyard

Sharon Winton attended the seminar Teaching Trees: Utilizing Your Schoolyard, while attending the 2017 MAEOE conference. During the session a deeper understanding of methods of tree identification were learned, including ways to use a dichotomous key and methods to instruct all students using the key. Outdoor tree identification practice during the session enabled all to gain real first-hand experience. Other benefits of the seminar including brainstorming of ideas of particular schoolyards and teaching resources available.
